Q.

Hi there.. I have a very strange problem. My videos run very slow on my computer. Also when I play them the CPU usage is above 70 %. Please help.

By: Senthil P.H   |  Posted On: 3/16/2011 11:53:36 AM
Ans. : First of all, make sure you have the latest driver software for your video card. To get the latest version, you can go to the video card company's web site and download the driver update for free. I would suggest defragmenting the hard drive, since excessive hard disk scanning can prevent smooth audio and video playback. If neither of these options do the trick, try upgrading to the latest version of the software you are using to play the movies. Finally, if that doesn't work, you might just not have enough hardware power to play the video smoothly. That means you need to actually go buy a new video card if you want smooth, high-quality video. Doh.

What does it mean when a computer is "low on resources?"

By: Austine   |  Posted On: 3/16/2011 10:19:18 AM
Ans. : The resources a computer has are mainly processing speed, hard disk storage, and memory. The phrase "low on resources" usually means the computer is running out of memory. The best way to prevent this error from coming up is to install more RAM on your machine. Upgrading your RAM is the best performance booster you can give your computer, and it usually doesn't cost a lot.

Can I replace non-ECC memory with ECC memory?

By: Rahul   |  Posted On: 3/14/2011 11:25:13 AM
Ans. ECC (Error Correcting Code) memory is parity memory and non-ECC memory is non-parity. Parity memory has an extra chip on the module that checks for errors in the transfer of information to and from the memory. So if a memory module has an odd number of chips, it is parity RAM. Many motherboards support both ECC and non-ECC memory. Some sources say you can even mix the two types of RAM and the ECC RAM will work as non-ECC memory. However, most memory companies do not support mixing the two types, so try it at your own risk. Since most motherboards will accept ECC memory, it often depends on if your computer's BIOS supports it. You may have to check your computer's manual to find the answer. If you have a choice, non-ECC memory is typically cheaper than ECC memory and works slightly faster. So when in doubt, use non-ECC memory.

Can I fax a document without a fax machine?

By: Niel   |  Posted On: 3/13/2011 3:24:37 AM
Ans. There are a number of fax programs available for faxing documents electronically using your computer's modem, or simply through the Internet. Some popular fax programs include FaxSTF (Mac) and Fax Wizard (Windows). These programs allow you to fax electronic documents such as Word documents or documents you scan into your computer. I would suggest visiting Download.com for a shareware fax program if you don't have one or visiting eFax.com for more information.

Why won't my computer boot up after I installed new memory?
By: KARTHIKA   |  Posted On: 3/13/2011 3:20:19 AM
Ans. Installing memory, or RAM, is a great way to improve the performance of your computer. However, there are many types of RAM, and it is important to install the correct RAM when updating your computer's memory. For example, not all 1GB RAM memory modules are the same. Some may run at 400MHz, while others may run at 667MHz. A 1GB SDRAM chip may have 168 pins, while a SO-DIMM may only have 144. These and other differences can cause RAM to not work with your machine. If you install the incorrect RAM in your machine, one of two things will happen. 1) The computer will boot up but will not recognize the new memory, or 2) The computer will not boot up at all. If you remove the new RAM and the computer boots up fine, it is pretty clear that the RAM is causing the problem. While RAM chips can be defective, memory problems are usually caused by installing the wrong type of RAM. You can verify the RAM type using your computer's user guide or by searching for your computer model on websites that sell memory. When buying RAM, it is also a good idea to make sure it has a lifetime warranty. That way, if the RAM is bad or ever has problems, you can get it replaced free of charge.

What does POST mean in reference to a computer's boot process?
By: Catherin   |  Posted On: 3/12/2011 9:41:50 AM
Ans. POST stands for "Power On Self Test." It is a diagnostic program built into the computer's hardware that tests different hardware components before the computer boots up. The POST process is run on both Windows and Macintosh computers. While the exact tests performed may vary between machines, most POST sequences check the vital hardware components, such as the power supply, RAM, and system bus. If any of these tests fail, the POST process will return an error message. This message may be displayed on the screen or may be output in the form of beeps or blinking lights. The most common type of POST error is a memory error. This can be caused by one or more bad memory modules or a memory chip that is loose or not fully seated. If the post process fails on your computer, you may need to check your computer's manual to see what the error code means. If it is a memory error, you may be able to fix the problem by removing, reinstalling, or replacing the bad memory module. If the error is caused by another component, you may need to have your computer serviced by an authorized technician. The POST process runs quickly at the beginning of the boot sequence before the operating system loads. Therefore, you most likely will not notice it unless there is an error. If the POST process finishes without encountering any errors, your computer will boot up normally.

I need to fnd out whether my PC is good enough to load Windows 7. Also what and how good is The Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor. Please help.

By: Prabhu80   |  Posted On: 10/12/2010 9:38:19 PM
Ans. Find out if your PC can run Windows 7 To see if your PC is ready for Windows 7, download the free Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor. It scans your PC for potential issues with your hardware, devices, and installed programs, and recommends what to do before you upgrade. The Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor checks for compatibility issues. If your PC can run Windows Vista, it can probably run Windows 7, but it's still a good idea to use the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor. Use the Compatibility Center to see if your hardware and software will work with Windows 7.

Q. Hi, We are looking at a Dekstop Computer configuration which suits well to our bussiness purpose. We need some twelve numbers to be deployed at our data collection center where the PC will be largely used for accepting applications on a daily basis. we expect the working hours to be around 9-10 hr per day and would like to perfomr well on the internet side. Other add ons needed are one printer, one scanner and the network infra structure. What configuration would you suggest? Do we need a client server architecture? If so what is the best supporting network backbone. Please advice. The Collections centers are to be located in our branches in Kolkata, chennai and cochin. Please advice.

Ans. Hi, Thanks for posting in. The best way to look for is a desktop with configurations like Intel Atom Processor, 2-3 GB RAM, less than 250GB HDD with no CD/DVD Drive/Writer etc. However when you select a keyboard, make sure it is a heavy duty one. You can consider brands like Logitech for mouse and KB. It is preferable to go for a 15" TFT Monitor (Samsung and Acer does well) than a CRT. Saves space and the operator''s eyes. As you suggested, Client-Server architecture will be better for the network. You can consider a Star or Star bus Topology. Find out more on topologies at wiki . As far as printer is concerned. You an all in one will be better when compared to the normal printers. However if printing is heavy you can consider buying a Laser from HP, Canon etc. Laser printers are little more expensive but in the long run they can save you a lot more than the Inkjets. If you are a starter in business looking for cheaper options you can even consider refurbished PCs with new TFT monitors. This will support you easily for more than two years. If all that you are going to do is Application Collection you can get a few dual cores with a higher RAM Capacity. Keep the DVD writers only in the server or selected few computers. Collection points do not require them anyway. I am sure you will also look at considering a centrally managed high capacity UPS for efficient power management. This investment indirectly increases the life of your PC. All the very best from Team MyRightBuy.

Q. hi, I am confused. I plan to buy a digital camera and eager to know what to look at. Is it all about megapixels? Its a small one i am looking for and no compromise on the quality. Please help me.
By: Jessy   |  Posted On: 6/8/2009 9:41:41 PM
Ans. Buying a sleek digital camera shouldn't be a problem since all the major brands have come out with small and sleek models. More important part is the understanding on mega pixels and the Zoom aspects. Most digital cameras brag about their Mega pixel count and are one of the most misunderstood aspects of digital Photography. It is nothing but the very mean measure of the quality of the image the camera can capture. A higher mega pixel count does not necessarily signify a better image quality. The quality of the lens, algorithms used to make the photo from raw data collected by the Sensor, and the focusing mechanism are more important features that contribute to the image quality. This does not meant that you will have to go for an SLR. For all practical purposes a 3-4 mp is adequate. Anything higher is luxury. But since we already have cameras with 8 and 16 mps under their hood, luxuries are now affordable. Another important factor is the size of the Sensor itself. Consumer digital cameras have tiny image sensors and in most cases are less than 10 microns due to the sleek size of the cameras, designed at least to fit in a pocket. A smaller sensor has its on drawbacks like difficulty in focusing on smaller areas, image instability and lower image quality. The quality of a 3mp image taken with a larger sensor cannot be compared to a 3mp image taken in a smaller camera (smaller sensor). To conclude on this aspect you can go for a digital camera with min of 6x optical zoom and pixel rate more than 4mp. Major brands like Canon, Nikon, Sony, Lumix or Kodak does not make much of difference in the quality of the image. it is completely based on the configurations and features the camera posses. Choose one with more automatic features if your camera is going to be used by every one in your family. Make sure you do some home work and find more on each camera you wish to consider. The feature of pulling out one color and leaving the rest black and white is a good feature that a digital camera gives but to be honest this can be better accomplished with a descent image editing software like Picasa. What if you want to make only the left corner colored and rest as black and white and what if you want two points (lets say two faces) colored? Using an image editing software will be a better option by all means. Personally, Canon is always a good camera with more professional features; But Sony is more user-friendly and delivers a comparable quality. These two are the major brands as far as smaller digital cameras a concerned. Happy Photography.
